Helpless

Helpless is how to best sum up my feelings since Tuesday. Here's how things played out last week:

Tuesday - Temp of 103.3 and no appetite - chalked it up to teething

Wednesday - Temp of 103 - still no appetite and we assumed the ear infection he had last week was back. Called doc because he was no longer responding to Motrin (temp stayed elevated). Doc told us to put him on a cocktail of Tylenol and Motrin and told us to come in the following morning so she could see him.

Thursday - Now no eating and only minimal drinking. Went to doc and Jackson was diagnosed with a sore throat (viral). I brought up the excessive drooling and intense, painful crying that had just begun and was told it was related to teething and the sore throat. Told to keep administering the "cocktail".

Friday - Jackson was up every 30-45 minutes over night and now has quite drinking. He WAILED all day and wanted SO BAD to drink but with one swallow he would scream in pain and ward off the sippy cup and even the bottle. At 7 PM we noticed a rash and called the on-call doc (just so happened to be our pediatrician). She said it could be a number of things but wanted to see him ASAP Saturday morning. By 9 PM the rash was all over and he was absolutely inconsolable (the most painful crying I've ever heard from him). I said screw waiting and we went to urgent care.

It took the ER doc 30 seconds to diagnose Jackson with strep throat and scarlet fever. Strep is a bacterial infection, not viral like was originally diagnosed and is very rare in children under 3. The strep had gotten so bad in his little body that he was no longer swallowing any of the saliva he produced (hence the excessive drooling) and the toxins from the infection were so high in his blood stream that he was beginning to react to them. This led to the rash and non-responsive high fever which gives you....scarlet fever. UGH.

Jackson is just miserable and we're helpless. Hopefully this turns around in 24 hours and he can begin eating, drinking and sleeping again. My parents are headed up tonight with dinner... Grandma,Grandpa / Mom,Dad to the rescue!

Better wrap this up as his cat nap should be about over. Hope the next posting is of of a healthy and happy Jackson.

We're thinking of you guys and praying for a quick recovery- and for patience for all! That has to be SO hard to watch him feeling so miserable. :(

How horrible Michelle! There is nothing worse then your baby being sick and not being able to do anything to make it better. I am thinking about you guys!

We hope that little Jackson is feeling better soon, and his mom and dad too - it's so much easier to be sick yourself!
Big hugs to all of you!!!
