Before I dive into the long Memorial Day weekend I have to recognize an event from the prior weekend. To start, Chris came upon a GREAT hunting spot about 5 minutes from our house for turkey season. The landowners were very nice and inviting. Low and behold, Chris got a turkey with his bow and Jackson was there for the entire thing! We lucked out because Chris had gone out at 4 am to get a bird, I brought Jackson out around 7:30 am. Ten minutes in the blind with Dad and Chris gets a turkey. I can't begin to tell you just how excited Jackson was, and still is, when he recounts the whole thing. I hope he doesn't have false hope that you get a turkey that quick every time!
An unbelievable sunset during one of out turkey scouting trips. I like t his photo, it captures the sentimate of the evening: relaxing and enjoyable. Chris was scouting down the way so Jackson and I spent the time building dirt roads and enjoyed the sunset.
Congrats boys!

Now on to Memorial Day weekend. We had a staycation weekend, very much intentional as our lives have been a bit chaotic lately and that doesn't seem to be ending anytime soon. So we relazxed and enjoyed our family time by planting flowers, tilling and planting the garden, Jackson had a few play dates, we played outside (nonstop), Jackson did bike laps in the rain (more on that below), we enjoyed Sunday night fireworks, and then we wrapped the weekend watching a Memorial Day parade and having a BBQ with friends. Our staycation beats out some of our destination vacations!
Chris tackling the planting we did this weekend. Jackson was helping but then ditched us for his friends. This is not the last time this will happen, I'm sure.
We finally lured him back and put him to work. : )
Work break: Jackson had to tell Grandpa a story.
The clan waiting for fireworks to start. It was a crazy beautiful night!!! It was the first time in a LONG time that I saw lightning bugs. Catching them was a lot of fun, brought back many childhood memories of lightning bug hunting on my Grandparent's farm.
Technology knows no boundaries. My Mom is holding my iPad, we were shopping for items to decorate my kitchen. Don't judge! We were making positive use of down time. Yes, I AM rationalizing this.
: )
Chris got some amazing photos of the fireworks. They don't do the experience justice but they're still beautiful.
Now on to explaining the bike laps in the rain. Chris, Jackson and I were playing outside when it started to rain, he was bummed because he didn't want to go inside. So we told him to stay out and ride, it wasn't lightning, just a nice, steady rain. So he did.
We ended up making a game out of laps around Chris' truck in the driveway. We told him how many laps to do and then guessed what trick he would do at the end of the last lap. This went on for almost an hour! The neighbors must be wondering what Jackson did to deserve hundreds of laps around the truck in the rain. It was a lot of fun and he slept well that evening.
Jackson and his buddy waiting for the Memorial Day parade to begin. Candy bag? Check!
The boys were strategizing their candy acquisition and sharing to even things out. You can see they ended up a little too far into the road, actually in the parade route. But hey, candy is candy!
(Yes, we did pull them back)
I like this photo, very patriotic. It's fun to explain the purpose of Memorial Day to Jackson, he has nothing but respect for our Military; we wouldn't have it any other way.
I hope you all had a great Memorial Day weekend!
